How Dirty Air Filters Affect Fuel Economy on Gas Cars and Diesel Trucks
Your engine needs air just as much as it needs fuel. Every time you press the accelerator, your engine draws in a large volume of air to help create the combustion that produces power. When the air filter becomes dirty or clogged, it can restrict that airflow—and that can affect how efficiently your engine operates.
But the effect of a dirty air filter is different in modern gasoline cars than it is in diesel trucks.
Gasoline Engines: The Effect Can Be Subtle
On older gasoline engines, a severely restricted air filter could have a noticeable effect on fuel economy. The engine needed a specific balance of air and fuel, and restricted airflow could reduce performance and efficiency.
Modern gasoline engines are more sophisticated. Sensors continuously monitor incoming air and adjust fuel delivery to maintain the proper air-fuel mixture. Because of this, a dirty air filter on a modern gas-powered vehicle may not cause the dramatic drop in fuel economy that many people expect.
That doesn’t mean the filter doesn’t matter. A severely restricted filter can reduce engine performance, throttle response and available power. The engine may also have to work harder under certain operating conditions. In addition, a filter that is excessively dirty can contribute to other drivability problems.
So while replacing an air filter isn’t necessarily a guaranteed way to gain several miles per gallon, maintaining proper airflow is still an important part of keeping a gasoline engine operating as designed.
Diesel Engines: Airflow Matters Even More
Diesel engines are a different story. Diesel engines operate with excess air under many normal conditions, and engine performance depends heavily on having sufficient airflow. Modern diesel trucks also use turbochargers to force large quantities of air into the engine.
A dirty air filter creates additional restriction. The turbocharger may have to work harder to provide the engine with the air it needs, potentially affecting boost, power and efficiency. Under heavy loads—such as towing, hauling or climbing hills—the difference can become more noticeable.
A restricted air filter can also contribute to reduced acceleration and increased exhaust smoke on some diesel engines. And because diesel pickups are frequently used for demanding work, maintaining unrestricted airflow is especially important.
Don’t Replace Filters Too Early—or Too Late
There is a common misconception that replacing an air filter as frequently as possible automatically improves fuel economy. It doesn’t. A filter that is still functioning properly doesn’t need to be replaced simply because it has been in the vehicle for a certain number of miles.
The better approach is to follow the vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations and consider the conditions in which the vehicle operates. Trucks driven on dusty roads, construction sites, farms or gravel roads may require more frequent filter inspection and replacement than vehicles driven primarily on clean paved roads.
A clean, properly fitting air filter helps ensure that your engine gets the airflow it was designed to receive. It also protects the engine from dirt and other contaminants that can cause expensive wear.
